Better homekeeping in 2009 -- you in?
« on: January 05, 2009, 03:51:05 PM »
How many of us are setting some goals (not mere resolutions) to foster better homekeeping in 2009? What goals are you setting? Why?

I'll go first.

I haven't set any goals per se, but I do have a number of reasons for wanting to be a better homekeeper this year. One reason is to be able to truly grow in hospitality in my HOME this year -- to have my home (mine is an apartment) in a condition that is fit for company to come over, with perhaps only about 10 to 15 minutes of prep to receive them. Right now, the state of things is far, far, FAR from being "company ready."

What about you?   :)

Hi Elainejuly~

Yes, I know the urge in this particular hospitable urgency from the Lord.  I have been praying about having a single ladies group into my itsy-bitsy park model.  There is room for a cosy group of 5 in the living room, although I need to purchase a larger set of chairs for my two person dining table. Most people want a back to their chairs and cushions that never slip.  As things are~ my guests have to balance on tiny stools whose cushions do not really fit.   :P

Picture this; Guest inquires; "Would you please pass the potatoes?" (Guest slips sweetly onto carpeted floor noiselessly)  Hostess answers; "Sure." (Hostess looks up, and exclaims...) "Hey! Where'd you go?"   http://::) Hostess; "There goes another diner down on the turf!"

Anywho~ I expect to put up sheer teal colored curtains, and air plants of vibrant green to go with my down sofas as well. Maybe the pretty sights and soft cushions will help massage their boo-boos. . .  :D

I pray you are guided by the Greatest Organizer, Who placed His glittering globes "just so" in the inky out-zones of His space.

I started some "better homekeeping" by getting rid of stuff (less clutter) last summer... since I've inherited my parent's pack-rat tendencies it's been quite a challenge and will likely be on going for some time!

Getting rid of some stuff was easy, it was in boxes that I'd packed when I moved four years earlier.  Figured if I hadn't missed it in the past four years, I wasn't going to miss it.  Bu-bye stuff!  Then cleaned out my t-shirt drawers -- don't ask how many...  I gave away over half of them and still have plenty.  Same for all my other clothes... took them down to a local mission for others to use.  And so on.  I still have a ways to go, but it looks a lot better already!

This thread topic has blitzed across my brain several times over the last few days as I wander by parts of my home that call for my attention.  It's a challenge, isn't it?  At least for me it is, living alone provides perhaps more relaxation than God ever intended (hah!).  Once a month I am forced to make my home completely presentable in preparation for the cleaning people.  (The cleaning people came with the lease, honest they did!).  Yes, I clean for the cleaning people.  But that has helped me be more disciplined in the upkeep.  Except they don't clean in the closets (at least I hope they don't!) and there are mountains growing in there that need to be conquered this year!  Rah rah rah, here's to better homekeeping!  ;D

Yes. You told us that.  ;)

I wonder: are you expressing frustration about yourself or expressing resignation to the creeping pile of stuff?

I can ask that b/c I too am a pack rat. (As well as being lazy about doing housework.) I really have to fight against that tendency. (Right now, my laundry is a HUGE multicolored mountain on my sofa b/c I wanted to clear my bedroom of it. I don't have a laundry room or closet in my apartment, nor do I have w/d hookups in the apartment.) Thus, the starting of this thread -- to encourage all our efforts.

Don't let the stuff win! You can make headway, even if it's a teeny improvement at a time. Baby steps. Baby steps. They lead to miles (or kilometers) of progress.  :)

So how else can we encourage you?  :)

Interesting, that's one of my resolutions this year too, ElaineJuly, to be more hospitable.  So, I'm having to be "less relaxed" about how I keep my house since more than me will be seeing it.  Anyway, I've already had one dinner guest on Monday, one boarder for three days, and on Friday, I'll have two more dinner guests.  How are you doing so far?  :)

P.S.  Very funny post, Poiema.  I can relate.   ;D
